Cloudy Water in Spas
There are many issues that may contribute to cloudy water. Some of them include:
- Suspended insoluble particles
- High organic contamination
- High phosphates
- Poor filtration
- Unbalanced water chemistry
Before any problem solving begins, it is very important to make sure the water is balanced. If the spa water is cloudy, balancing water chemistry may fix the problem. Once the water chemistry is balanced, we can then proceed in finding the cause. If the spa is in heavy use, the cloudiness may be caused by high organic contamination. We would highly suggest using Spa Perfect on a weekly basis to help with the continual breakdown of organics.
Spa Perfect's patented formula establishes an active base of natural enzymes to aid in the breakdown of organic waste. It biodegrades body oils, cosmetics, suntan oils, and other organics commonly found in spa water. This helps to eliminate scum rings, reduce cloudy water, and allows for increased filter cycles in your spa.
If the spa has suspended insoluble particles that are not getting caught in the filter, we recommend using Spa Clear which is a chitosan based clarifier that will help polish the water by coagulating small particles to be removed by the filter.

Crabs and other crustaceans have a product in their shells called "chitosan" that attracts small particles of debris in water. Use to effectively and quickly clear problem water or to "polish" dull water by removing small suspended particles
It is also important to have the phosphates and calcium hardness levels checked. Phosphates and calcium will bond with one another which will create calcium phosphate. Calcium phosphate can lead to scale build up in the spa as well as inefficiency of salt generators. If there are high levels of phosphates, we recommend using Spa PHOSfree to lower them to under 100ppb and Spa Stain & Scale to help control calcium.
