Chlorine Generator (Salt Pools)

The electrolysis used by salt generators attracts calcium and other minerals to the plates. When the calcium and other minerals build up, they will reduce the effectiveness of the cell. Another issue with salt generators can be due to high phosphate levels. Phosphates and calcium bond to make calcium phosphate, which causes ineffectiveness of the generator. By removing the phosphates and maintaining proper calcium hardness levels, you can keep the cell running at optimum performance. To test whether or not you are dealing with regular calcium scale or calcium phosphate scale, remove a portion of the scale buildup and dissolve in a test tube of water. By having this sample tested for phosphates, treatment options then can be determined. If high levels of phosphates are present in the test water, begin treatment with Phosfree or Phosfree Extra Strength depending on how high the level is when you test. Lowering phosphate levels within the pool, and following with Cell Protect can help in preventing scale buildup. When treating any type of scale, remember the more brushing the better. Maintaining low levels (100ppb or lower) of phosphates is important to keep calcium and phosphates from combining. Natural Chemistry's Salt Water Magic Liquid is a monthly maintenance product that will help maintain low levels of phosphates.

Scale buildup on the cell of a chlorine generator causes unnecessary stress on the system’s ability to perform. The prevention of any kind of scale buildup, including calcium scale and calcium phosphate scale, is imperative to protect a generator’s cell. Using a quality NON PHOSPHATE stain and scale product such as Cell Protect is ideal to help prevent calcification on the salt generator’s cell. Many stain & scale products actually contain components that break down into orthophosphate, which can end up causing problems for the pool. By choosing Cell Protect your pool will have a preventative treatment without adding phosphates.
