METAL STAIN REMOVAL PROCEDURE
Note: Operating the pool for a couple of days without chlorine can create an algae concern. Follow your pool dealer’s recommendations on steps you can take to protect your pool from algae during this metal stain removal process.
Step 1
Stain Determination: Using a vitamin C tablet, apply onto stained area. If the stain is removed or lightened by the vitamin C tablet, then the STAINfree® products will work.
Step 2
Balance pool water chemistry before using the STAINfree® products:
pH: 7.2-7.6, Alkalinity: 80-120ppm, Calcium Hardness: 200-400, Phosphates: ideally below 100ppb
Note: Stain removal products work best when the pH is on the lower side of acceptable range (7.2)
Lower the chlorine residual to 1 ppm. A high chlorine level or adding oxidizing agents during the process will prevent STAINfree® products from working as designed.
Step 3
Selecting the right product: For minor staining (small areas or steps), use STAINfree® (17400NCM)
For faster results on older stains that appear on the floors and walls, use STAINfree Extra Strength® (17395NCM)
Step 4
To treat surface staining: Add 1lb of STAINfree® or STAINfree Extra Strength® per 10,000 gallons as close to the stained area(s) as possible with the pump turned off overnight. To treat water discoloration caused by metals: If the entire body of water is discolored, put the pool on recirculate, and add 1 lb of STAINfree® or STAINfree Extra Strength® per 10,000 gallons around the perimeter of the pool and let the circulation run for one hour.
Step 5
Brush with surface-compatible bristles. With the pump still on, vacuum the pool walls and floor thoroughly. After one hour, shut the pump off and let sit overnight.
Surface Staining: Add 1lb of Stainfree™ or Stainfree Extra Strength™ per 10,000 gallons as close to the stained area(s) as possible with the pump turned off overnight
Step 6
Turn the pump on and add METALfree® around the perimeter of the pool at a rate of 1L per 20,000 gallons
Step 7
Add Filter Aid™ to skimmer per label directions for filter type and size
Step 8
Clean filters to remove Filter Aid™
Sand filter- backwash for at least 3 minutes and then rinse for 2 minutes
Cartridge filter- clean filter and filter tank thoroughly
Step 9
Test and rebalance water to normal conditions pH: 7.2-7.6, Alkalinity: 80-120ppm, Calcium Hardness: 200-400
DO NOT SHOCK THE POOL FOR AT LEAST 1 WEEK if staining is still present
Note: If chlorine level is low, add small amounts of chlorine
Step 10
Repeat as necessary if stains return or are not completely removed
Step 11
Continue to prevent metals from staining by using METALfree® on a weekly basis by adding 4 oz per 10,000 gallons
DO NOT SWIM UNTIL STAIN PROCEDURE IS COMPLETE AND A NORMAL CHLORINE RESIDUAL IS ESTABLISHED.
